Dog Sled Summer Camp (Land Based)

Within a few miles of Juneau you will be transported back in time to relive the spirit of the gold rush with an Iditarod Dog Musher and his team of Alaskan huskies. 

Husky puppiesTake a breathtaking drive along Gastineau Channel, through the historic AJ Gold Mine Site and into the remote Sheep Creek Valley. Surrounded by massive mountain peaks and glaciers you will be greeted by Iditarod Mushers and their teams of huskies.  Your musher will guide you through a highly educational tour of Sheep Creek Dog Camp located on the actual site of the famous AJ Mine. He or she will entertain you with real tales from the trail & legends from the days of the gold rush. See an exact replica of an Iditarod Race checkpoint and go through the steps the musher goes through as if you were actually arriving at the checkpoint with him. Learn how dog care and the health of the musher’s dogs are his two greatest concerns. Visit our puppies and help us with their initial social training. Interactive and Interpretive displays of the Alaskan gold rush days and sled dogs, then and now, are placed within easy walking distance throughout the Camp.  Visit your musher’s wall tent and learn what its like to live in the middle of 120 happy huskies.  

Land Dog SledThe real excitement begins when you climb aboard our comfortable wheeled sleds. Experience the thrill of mushing through beautiful Sheep Creek Valley behind a team of highly trained Alaskan Huskies.

Duration:  This tour is approximately 2 ¼ hours in length from dock departure to return.  While at the camp you will spend about 20 minutes with your dog team and the mushing portion is approximately 1 ½ miles in length with time after to meet the puppies.
